Candidate Information

This is general information for candidates interested in contesting a municipal office. Eligible candidates can run for one of the following offices:

  • Mayor
  • Councillor, Ward 1
  • Councillor, Ward 2
  • Councillor, Ward 3
  • Councillor, Ward 4
  • Thames Valley District School Board (for the County of Oxford) – 2 Positions  (file with the City of Woodstock)
  • London District Catholic School Board (for the County of Oxford) – 1 Position  (file with the City of Woodstock)
  • Conseil scolaire catholique Providence (for the Counties of Oxford, Perth, and Grey) – 1 Position  (file with the City of Woodstock)
  • Conseil scolaire Viamonde (for the Counties of Oxford, Elgin, Lambton, Haldimand and Norfolk and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent) – 1 Position  (file with the City of Sarnia)
     

Candidate's Package

Each election, Township Staff prepare a package containing valuable information for those individuals who are thinking about running as a candidate in the municipal or school board election.  Below you will find a copy of the information package and required forms.

Election Sign By-law

Specific guidelines must be followed if placing election signs on properties in Zorra Township. View our election sign by-law here.

Nominations are open as of Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. and close on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. To run as a Member of Council for the 2018 Municipal Election, you must file a nomination paper. Please note the following:

  • Until you file a nomination paper, you cannot raise or spend money on your campaign;
  • Mayor and Councillor candidates must provide at least 25 declaration of endorsements from qualified electors along with their nomination papers

In order to run for office in Zorra Township, an individual must be:

  • A Canadian citizen; and
  • At least 18 years of age; and
  • A resident of the Township of Zorra, or
  • An owner or tenant of land in the Township of Zorra, or the spouse of the owner or tenant; and
  • Not legally prohibited from voting; and
  • Not disqualified by any legislation from holding office

The following are not eligible to be elected as a Member of Council, or from holding office as a Member of Council:

  • A judge of any court
  • A member of Provincial Legislature, the Federal House of Commons or Senate who has not resigned from their office by the close of nominations
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement in the last municipal election or by-election​​

Nomination forms must be filed in-person as original signatures are required.  To file a nomination, you must provide the following:

  • A completed Nomination Form
  • At least 25 declaration of endorsements (Mayor and Council candidates only)
  • Current acceptable identification
  • Nomination filling fee

Any documents that are not complete will not be accepted. You may file a nomination form beginning May 1, 2018 to July 27, 2018 ending at 2 p.m. Nomination Form Available here. Endorsement of Nomination Form Available Here.

If you no longer wish to run for office in the 2018 Municipal Election, you must:

  • File the Withdrawal of Nomination Form in-person
  • Provide identification
  • File a financial statement by the deadline

The last day to file a withdrawal is Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m.

  • Consent and acknowledgement regarding Election Sign-By-law
